CiS Utilities
CIS Utilities is a collection of free disk utilities for Windows, developed by Computers & Information Systems - Novi Sad, Serbia.
These small but versatile utilities are specifically designed to extend the capabilities of major multi-user applications that occupy
considerable amount of disk space and/or create or destroy a large number of files during everyday work.
CIS Utilities could be used, for example, to accompany the SWIFT Alliance application and to automate everyday backup and space
management tasks.
Components
CIS Utilities currently features the following utilities (they are independent of each other):
| |
CIS Synchronize - to synchronize contents of folders on local and/or remote computers
This component is the focal point of 'CIS utilities'. It enables the synchronization of one or more folders locally or over
the Microsoft Windows Network, i.e. it copies the contents of the folder (files and subfolders) to the specified shared folder
on a local computer network.
The utility checks the existence of each and every file on the target folder and actually copies only new or modified files.
Files that were copied earlier, but have been in the meanwhile removed from the source folder, are deleted from the target folder.
If it is used to accompany SWIFT Alliance, CIS Synchronize can back up the whole C:\Win32App\Swift folder over the network,
all the application and program data. This backup is more reliable than a tape backup or write to CD/DVD and lasts only a fraction
of the time needed to create the tape or burn CD/DVD.
CIS Delete - to delete obsolete files and folders
This utility enables automatic deletion of obsolete files from specified folders and their subfolders.
The file becomes obsolete if it was modified more than N days ago. This parameter N, the number of days for which a file
should be kept, can be independently specified for each folder.
A shortcut to 'CIS Delete' could be placed to the Startup submenu under the Programs submenu of the Start menu.
If it is used to accompany SWIFT Alliance, 'CIS Delete' can, for example, automatically delete those less important printed
messages which were not printed on paper, but actually "printed" to a file for future reference, if needed.
These files tend to hog up valuable disk space.
CIS Relocate - to relocate long term files and folders
Long-term archives are maintained using the 'CIS Relocate' utility. It moves files or
subfolders from a folder, which is used on a day-to-day basis, to less frequently used media,
perhaps to CD-R or CD-RW (recordable or rewriteable compact discs).
Of course, the destination folder may, be on located the same disk, on a different medium on
the same machine, or across the Microsoft Windows Network.
The file is moved if it was modified more than N days ago. This parameter N, the number of
days for which a file remains in its original folder, can be independently specified for each folder.
A shortcut to 'CIS Relocate' could be placed to the Startup submenu under the Programs submenu of the Start menu.
If it is used to accompany SWIFT Alliance, 'CIS Relocate' can, for example, automatically move from the
C:\Win32App\Swift\Alliance\Server\Archive folder every file, which is older than let's say 30 days to a folder that is not replicated over the network.
CIS Transfer - to automatically transfer files using Microsoft Windows Network or TCP/IP FTP
With this component, files can be automatically transferred from one computer to another, using
the Microsoft Windows Network or the TCP/IP File Transfer Protocol. The utility transfers all
files (subfolders are omitted) from the specified folder to a remote location. If the transfer
of a file is successful, it is archived (moved to a predefined folder);
CIS Configure - to choose which folder(s) should be synchronized, deleted or relocated
To specify the folders, the contents of which should be synchronized, deleted, relocated or
transferred, use 'CIS Configuration', a tabbed dialog, which has a tab for each component of
'CIS utilities';
Using the utilities
Having specified the folders, the utilities are started from the 'CIS utilities' program folder on the Programs subfolder of the Start menu.
All activity is written to a corresponding log file, on the same folder to which the utilities were installed.
The utilities can abort execution for a number of reasons. The messages describing these reasons are self explanatory.

Registration
The non-registered version has some limitation which will be eliminated by registering
- Synchronize, Delete and Relocate will process only one folder and only 200 files on that folder.
- Transfer can be used only between 09:00 and 12:00.
To remove these limitations, please register. Registration is completely free!
To register, click on 'Register' button on the tab for configuring 'Synchronize'. Please enter:
- your name OR the name of your company
- your country
- a valid e-mail address - CIS will send your key to this address.
Click on 'Save' and attach the 'CIS utilities.ini' file from your Windows folder to a new e-mail message and send it
to registration(at)cis-eu.net.
When your receive your key from CIS, enter once more the Registration dialog, copy your key from the mail message and
paste it into the appropriate field and click 'Register'.
Please note: the key is valid ONLY on one computer. If you install 'CIS utilities' on several machines, you will have to
register each copy in order to obtain a valid key for each machine.
As explained earlier, CIS utilities is designed to accompany SWIFT Alliance, which runs on servers on very secure
segment of the network. It is recommended, that these servers are not connected to the Internet and do not have e-mail
client installed. That is why you must register offline.
